The Co-Chairs of the JCEC praised the high-level diplomatic relations between the two countries, referring to the visits of Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó to Albania in February and April, as well as the visits of Prime Minister Edi Rama in June and President Ilir Meta in July to Budapest.

In line with this, the Co-Chairs expressed their genuine pleasure that their countries will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations next year. The Sides stated that the HungarianAlbanian Intergovernmental Joint Economic Commission provides an opportunity to further develop our bilateral relations. On the margin of the visit in Tirana in February 2021, Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade agreed with his partner, Olta Xhaçka, Albanian Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs to hold the next Session of the JCEC.

Péter Sztáray emphasized that Hungary is committed to the Western Balkans’ European and Euro-Atlantic integration due to its national security and economic interests, and reaffirmed Hungary's strong support for accelerating Albania's accession to the European Union.

Albania was shaken twice in 2019 by strong earthquakes, consequently countless buildings and religious sites were also damaged. For the restoration, Hungary provided 84 million forints in aid within the framework of the Hungary Helps Program in cooperation with the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Tirana-Durres. In April 2020, Hungary provided 100 thousand masks and 5 thousand protective clothing to Albania in order to fight the pandemic.

The Secretary of State assessed our bilateral trade balanced, but drew attention to some areas where progress can be made in the future. Péter Sztáray described OTP Bank's presence in Albania as the flagship of economic cooperation. Thanks to the efforts made by the Hungarian Government, direct WizzAir flights between the two capitals will resume twice a week from 22 November 2021. The State Secretary characterized the cooperation between Budapest Waterworks Plc. and Tirana Waterworks stable and constructive.

The Albanian Co-Chair expressed his gratitude for the fact that 20 Albanian students have the opportunity to study at Hungarian universities every year through the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Programme provided by the Government of Hungary.
